Statement: NPN Supports Northern Logging
On Wednesday February 4th, 2026, the Wisconsin Assembly Committee on Ways and Means held a hearing that included AB619, a bill relating to the potential sustainable aviation fuel project in Hayward. At Northwoods Policy Network, we are intensely focused on expanding opportunity to the northern region of our state – especially when these opportunities revolve around our legacy industries. It is our opinion that AB 619 deserves serious consideration by the legislature.
Wisconsin’s forestry industry has faced steady decline over the previous decades with the reduction in domestic and foreign markets. We are all acutely aware of the impact that mill closures have had on our communities. What is seen less is the impact on loggers, truckers, and their families or communities. In the north, this accelerated decline is witnessed every day.
NPN’s Executive Director adds, “Putting an emphasis on an industry that benefits the entire state is important. We recognize the potential this project holds towards renewing economic opportunity and community growth throughout the state and especially the Northwoods. Wisconsin deserves to continue leading the way in forestry and emerging manufacturing industries like this.”
